Today in Rock – January 18th

On this date in 1981, Wendy O. Williams of The Plasmatics was arrested on stage at Milwaukee and was charged with the offence of simulating sex with a sledgehammer. Williams later filed a multimillion dollar civil suit against the Milwaukee Police, claiming they sexually assaulted and beat her during the arrest, but a jury rejected her claims.

The Plasmatics were the most sexually depraved punk band I had ever seen or heard back in the late 70’s. Had the chance to see them at My Father’s Place in Roslyn. It was insane. Wendy darned black electric tape on her private areas, which fell off a few times. Her male guitar player wore a ballerina skirt and bashed himself in the head with his guitar, drawing blood.

It ended with Wendy O Williams (nickname WoW) taking a chainsaw to a guitar, cutting it in half.

I can’t remember if they were any good musically, but it really didn’t matter.

I will never forget it.

Wendy O is gone, The Plasmatics, a memory. But oh what a memory.

I know Michael Maccarrone was at this show and I hope he comments with more details, since he seems to remember more than I do.

Come On Michael.

Definitely liked the energy of that band, and the seriousness she had while destroying that stuff on stage.
